Top Web Directories & ILQ Explained

Now with most SEO experts holding that Pagerank has little or no ranking weight, some of the most meaningful stats to determine the value of a sites inbound links are how many dir.yahoo.com, DMOZ, EDU and GOV inbound links a site has.

This is how the Inbound Link Quality (ILQ) rating system works. Yahoo links get 1 point (you get an average of 15 links per Yahoo Directory submission), each DMOZ link get 30 points, each EDU link is given 45 links, and each GOV link gets 67 points. The points are all added up and that gives you the ILQ Rating.

I am not advocating that links coming from Web directories with no dir.yahoo, DMOZ, EDU or GOV links don't provide any ranking weight, but I am advocating that the quality of the inbound links a directory has will make a difference in the ranking weight a link from a directory gives.

Also just because a directory has a dir.yahoo, DMOZ, EDU or GOV links doesn't mean it is passing ranking weight. If the directory has run of the site links (ROS) that aren't in a nofollow tag, or if the editor quality is low, or they are giving links out to sites that are in bad neighborhoods they many not be passing any ranking weight.
