Gmail Java Client

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

Google Inc. has just announced the released its newest mobile client - Gmail for mobile devices. It is fast and free, with features and an interface designed specifically for handheld devices.

The application brings not just the usual email messages but a whole other suite of features that used to be just available on the desktop version - search functions for data and images, conversation view, and automatic synchronization.

It automatically pre-fetches the messages making email retrieval faster; file and photo attachments are viewable and resized for the user’s phone. User experience is enhanced with reduced clicks, scrolls, and keystrokes.

Here is a list of the phones Gmail for moblie application works on.

Google commits in helping people stay connected and realizes the mobile phone’s big part in “balancing online and offline worlds”. This new client, compatible with all J2ME-enabled phones, is set on providing quick access to information when and where needed.

Bigdaddy Update Status

Friday, March 24th, 2006

Matt Cutts has posted in Bigdaddy Status Update: Almost There that there are only 1 or 2 datacenters left in the switchover.

I posted on the thread and asked Matt about the status of the PR export as it seems that one has happened in the middle of the Bigdaddy update. He noted that “I think you’re more likely to see a PR update soon.”

Bigdaddy Update

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

The Bigdaddy updated was first mentioned by Matt Cutts on Novemember 30th in a blog comment where Matt noted “66.249.93.104 is the test data center (I think; as I get older, I get worse at IP addresses and phone numbers). If I do put out a call for feedback, the keyword will be bigdaddy…”

The Google Bigdaddy update is not an algorithm update but an infrastructure update according to Matt’s January 4th blog post where he posted “…new infrastructure at the Bigdaddy data center will let us tackle canonicalization, dupes, and redirects in a much better way going forward compared to the current Google infrastructure.”

On the same date Cutt’s did a post titled Bigdaddy Data Center where he did some question and answers.

Brett and WMW normally name updates. But this is neither an update nor a data refresh; this is new infrastructure…

It has some new infrastructure, not just better algorithms or different data. Most of the changes are under the hood, enough so that an average user might not even notice any difference in this iteration…

And the changes on Bigdaddy are relatively subtle (less ranking changes and more infrastructure changes). Most of the changes are under the hood, and this infrastructure prepares the framework for future improvements throughout the year.

The lastest update on Bigdaddy was the 1st of February where he offers a time table for datacenter conversions.

Remember that Bigdaddy involves new infrastructure and is not just a data push or algorithm update. Don’t take it as a promise, but I’d expect a new data center to be converted to Bigdaddy roughly every 10 days or so.

Pagerank Brings More Traffic

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

Well it may not bring you more traffic, but it brings me more traffic. You probably were expecting some thing about how higher Pagerank (PR) will bring you more traffic - you won’t get that from me. (Having a higher Toolbar PR can bring you more traffic but it is not the PR that brings the traffic, it is what brings the PR - the inbound links.)

Anyway a Google give us all a Pagerank export (I put update in the title as not all realize it is just a export) on Oct 19th and with it I got a 32% traffic spike.

October 10-21/2005 Traffic:

This is for the most part traffic to my Pagerank Export History page. If you havn’t been seen it yet check it out. I have been told it is the best Pagerank (Google directory and Toolbar), Backlink, and Algorithm history on the Internet.

Jagger Update 2 More Weeks

Friday, October 21st, 2005

Well lots of people dropped out on this update. But hold on and don’t jump to any concultions. If you dropped out you may just come back.

GoogleGuy has posted at SearchEngineWorld that it is going to be a couple of weeks before the update is over.

Dayo_UK, you’re going to want to wait a couple weeks. The third stage of Jagger is the most likely to bring canonicalization changes. We’re still in stage one at this point. If you still see issues after that, I’d let us know.

Google Directory Has Updated

Friday, October 21st, 2005

Well I haven’t seen this mentioned on any of the SEO forums, I didn’t look hard, but we had an update of the contents and an export of Google Directory PR.

I now see my new Regional link that I added up to DMOZ (it got approved with in 2 weeks) in the Google directory. I have had some people email letting me know the order and PR has changed.

If you have seen any good threads on this drop it in the comments please.

Google Update

Monday, October 17th, 2005

Well it looks like there is a Google algorithm update under way. That means you will see a big change in the SERP’s. Keyword SEO Company move from #5 to #2 and #3 on my site and I have been in #5 for I don’t know how long. SEO Company is a 13k Overture PPC per month word so that is a pretty competitive keyword to rank well for in the SEO industry.

There has is been quite a bit of talk for the last week about the SERPs moving around. Last week Search Engine Roundtable had a post Google Update? where Barry noted the discuss on SEO forums on there being an update.

“For what it is worth, there has been some quiet threads plugging away this week discussing a possible Google update that is going on. Many are watching some of the datacenters closely.”

Here are some of the threads on the forums that have been discussing this since last week.
DigitalPoint: Google seems to be dancing
SE0Chat: Google update today
Webmaster World: Google’s Pending September Update

I have been keeping an eye on Matt Cutts blog watching for a weather report but nothing from Matt.

Interesting this is we are due for both a Toolbar Pagerank and a Backlink export. Last Toolbar PR export was 95 days ago on July 14th and for Backlinks the last export was 43 days ago on Sept 4th. You can see the latest dates and numbers on this Pagerank Export History page.

Note I said Toolbar Pagerank export and Backlink export. They are not longer considered updates as they don’t affect the SERP. And SERP movement during a TBPR or BL export is due to the on going everflux changes.
